It can affect both primary (&#8220;baby&#8221;) and permanent (&#8220;adult&#8221;) teeth, and is usually the result of genetic, systemic or environmental factors that alter the formation of enamel during amelogenesis (the process of tooth enamel formation during tooth development). <\/p>\n<h2>Causes of dental hypoplasia<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Genetic factors:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Amelogenesis imperfecta (incorrect formation of tooth enamel during tooth development due to mutations in genes that regulate tooth enamel).<\/li>\n<li>Genetic syndromes such as Treacher Collins or Turner syndrome.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Systemic factors:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Childhood illnesses (measles, chickenpox, malnutrition)<\/li>\n<li>Nutritional deficiencies (calcium deficiency, vitamin D, vitamin A)<\/li>\n<li>Metabolic disorders such as hypoparathyroidism<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Environmental factors:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Maternal infections during pregnancy<\/li>\n<li>Exposure to toxins (severe fluorosis, tetracyclines)<\/li>\n<li>Periapical trauma or infection of primary teeth affecting permanent successors<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>Clinical manifestations<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>Depressions, grooves or areas with partial loss of enamel.<\/li>\n<li>Abnormal coloration (white, yellowish or brownish).<\/li>\n<li>Increased susceptibility to caries.<\/li>\n<li>Increased tooth sensitivity.<\/li>\n<li>In severe cases, alterations in the shape of the tooth.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>Treatment<\/h2>\n<p>The approach depends on the severity of the defect:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Mild cases:<\/strong> Sealants, fluoridation and remineralization with CPP-ACP.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Moderate cases:<\/strong> Composite resins to restore anatomy.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Severe cases:<\/strong> Composite or ceramic crowns, and in extreme cases, prosthetic rehabilitation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Early detection is key to prevent complications and improve the esthetics and functionality of affected teeth.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is dental enamel hypoplasia?
